The German government having diiven all French insurance companies from Alsace-Lor¬ raine, the French papers are naturally urging the expulsion of German compnnies from France. A French insurance journal, the La Semaine, does not like the competition of the New ITork Life Insurance Company. Americans are too enterprising for them. It is said that the administration of the build¬ ing department bas greatly improved since com¬ ing under control of the Fire Commissioners. The fire department of Philadelphia seems to be in a bad vs^ay. One wing of the Council want the Maj^or to appoint the chief engineer, and the other wing want to choose him themselves. The recent report of the insurance commis¬ sioner of Canada states that the year 1880 was the most prosperous ever known. It is the first time in twelve years that the losses have been below 50 per cent, of the premiurr.s. The sum of $165,000 has been appropriated by the New York insurance companies for the maintenance of the fire patrol for the next two years. In Illinois they have a law insuring against loss by tornadoes. A law giving indemnity for rash speculation would be the thing in New York. Mr. John A. Monsell, the well-known dealer in realty, saved the life of a German sailor a few nights since while out yachting. It was a very stormy night, and about twelve o'clock Mr. Mon¬ seU thought he heard cries of some one for help, and immediately ordered his men to lower a boat; this they were unwiUing to do at first, thinking Mr. MonseU was mistaken, but he in¬ sisted, and the result proved he was correct. The man was exhausted, and in a few minutes would have sank for the last time. The new building for the Hai-vard Medical School is going to stand at the corner of Boylston and Exeter streets, Boston. There will be a facade on each street, with the main entrance on Boylston street. It -wall be constructed of brick and sandstone, in the renaissance style, and -will be four stories high, with basement. On Boylston street, between the second, third and fourth floors mezzanine stories will be inserted in the middle section. It will be 99x130 feet, and 90 feet in height at its highest, the main building being 80 feet high. The new machine shops and roundhouses of the Long Island Railroad Company wiU soon be buUt near Newtown creek. BUILDINGS PROJECTED. NEW TORR CITT.
